This blog will post articles, lectures, videos, and personal op-eds on aspects of the Academy that could stand to be tweaked, revamped, or transformed.
By the Academy, I mean post-secondary education in general and universities / colleges in particular.
I will try to keep things relevant and a little less dry than academic writing tends to be. ;)
I feel the need to write about this because I see universities struggling under burdens of rising costs, cutbacks, and rising expectations, while at the same time, we are in the midst of an unprecedented fundamental change in the nature of human access to information. If we value the Academy, and I sure do, we need to update it every so often so that it stays useful AND so that people understand that usefulness!
Suggestions are welcome as to topics. I've already got plans for
- the university library (show of hands; who's been inside the building? and does it matter?)
- working alone on academic stuff (how common, challenging, and likely stupid it really is)
- academic research and the Internet (how hard it is to explain to oldsters and youngsters how different pre- and post- Internet eras really are)
- academic research and Big Data (we are only starting to grasp how huge this is)
- this is one of my 20Cents
